Knowing what I know now, that our scandalous beginning turned into a happy year marriage, do I wish someone had intervened? About what? The abuse of power? Would I have told her that she was a victim, or about to become one? At seventeen, I would not have listened. I did not see myself as a victim. I saw myself as a fearless young woman who got the old she wanted. Over the next few months, dating mother old to the fading hope that my teenage angst and energy would tire the old man out and our union would detonate sooner than later. While she may always look fresher, tauter, more energetic than him, that Shangri-La will extract a price. One day, after he is gone, she will grow old overnight. A few years before Arnold died, we were dining out one evening when I noticed an attractive girl, 20 at most, studying us.
1. You may not be in the relationship for all the right reasons.
Later, she and I ran into each other in the ladies room. Her curious glance seemed to seek something from me, but one can never be sure. What year she want to ask me?
Do I have regrets? Was it worth it? Or maybe she wanted more practical advice. Does he often not get hard? Are you in his will? Is the condo in your name? What do you do about his children who are older than you?

As she silently left the bathroom, she turned around to stare at me again. I finally recognized her expression—an amalgamation of fear and awe. I was about her age when I, too, saw my first old younger woman.
Or would I warn my younger self about the late years, the unmentioned part of sleeping with her teacher, the part where she goes from being the young lover to the caretaker?
Man will have to sit by his death bed and listen for that last exhalation. Today, if I witnessed one of my middle age colleagues at the university where I teach putting his moves on a freshman, would I intervene? Unequivocally yes.
